How I create my work
My work combines traditional artistic principles with contemporary digital techniques.
I draw, paint, compose and develop imagery digitally, working with colour, texture, washes, marks and watercolour effects to create the finished artwork. Depending on the piece,
a number of different tools and processes may be used during its development.
From reference to artwork
I often begin with photography and visual reference, sometimes working from several different views of the same building, place, vehicle or subject.
These references give me the proportions, details, character and atmosphere I need to begin developing an image. From there, I create and refine the composition digitally.
My process can include drawing and painting techniques, layering, colour work, photographic manipulation, digital watercolour techniques and effects, image editing and AI-assisted image Upscaling to A3,A2 and even larger!
These tools can be used to explore compositions and alternative viewpoints, develop elements within an image and help build the underlying artwork.
Throughout the process I continue to direct, edit and refine the image, making decisions about composition, viewpoint, colour, atmosphere, texture, detail, what stays, what disappears and ultimately when an artwork is finished.
The exact combination of techniques varies from one piece to another.
Watercolour
Watercolour has a strong influence on much of my work.
I use its visual language — washes, transparent colour, pigment-like textures, softened and broken edges, loose marks and areas of white — when developing my artwork.
These watercolour effects may be created digitally. If a piece is an original physical watercolour painted with traditional watercolour pigment on paper, I will specifically describe it as an original watercolour. Originals can be purchased from the gallery that represents my work. I only sell prints of my work at the moment in time.
Preparing the finished artwork
Once an artwork is complete, I prepare the finished digital artwork file for reproduction. This can include specialist digital enlargement to achieve the resolution required for high-quality printing while retaining the texture and character of the image.
I may also create digital or AI-assisted presentation mock-ups showing how an artwork could look framed, mounted, displayed or reproduced as another product. These are visualisations rather than photographs of the physical product unless stated otherwise.
